Introduction of Staff Readers – Book #3

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

We would like to introduce the group of staff readers for our Global Book Club’s third book, In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. Get to know them here, through their self-written bios, and stay tuned for the first book discussion later this week.

Katherine Hubbard, Manager, Student Conferences

Katherine HubbardI am a native of Kansas City, and moved back to the area in 2004 after graduating from Pepperdine University, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Religion.  Since 2005 I have worked in the Student Department at People to People International.  In my current position, I am responsible for coordinating the Global Youth Forum, the EXPERIENCE student travel programs and YG travel programs.

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend my sophomore year of college studying abroad in the beautiful city of Heidelberg, Germany, and I have been equally lucky to see fascinating parts of the globe through my work with PTPI.  My favorite international travel experience has been hiking through the villages of Cinque Terre in Italy.  Everything from the coastline hugging hike, colorful villages built into cliffs, fresh seafood and local wine enjoyed while watching a spectacular sunset was as relaxing as it was invigorating; it is a place I definitely want to visit again!

Outside of work, I greatly enjoy spending time with my husband (Josh) and dog (Hershey), cooking, running, working on our house, being in the Colorado mountains each summer and Kansas City Chiefs football.

Ahmed Roushdy, Middle East/Africa Coordinator

Ahmed RoushdyI’m from Cairo, Egypt. One of my favorite things to my heart is traveling. It doesn’t matter whether it’s just couple of hours driving to a remote place in the Egyptian desert overlooking the Red Sea‘s turquoise water or 24 hour flights with many “randomly selected” security checks – I just love it. Meeting new people, my eyes watching new scenery, listening to different music and language as well as enjoying diverse cuisines is just addictive.

My personal and professional passion is marketing. I am planning to start my MBA in couple of years with a Marketing concentration and possibly an integration of International Relations. I love reading books about personal development and I am blessed to be living in a city which takes hours of commute time between point A and point B. Cairo’s traffic is just crazy, but its part of our daily routine. Looking at the positive side, I am blessed with time so I get to listen to a lot of audio books.

My favorite travel experience was my first trip to Paris. It meant a lot to me to finally be able to use my French, which I studied for around nine years, to walk around Paris and enjoy the lovely buildings, as well as to walk up and down the Champs-Élysées. I loved the people, the food and the art. The Arc de Triumph and Tour Eiffel were just spectacular. My dream came true: mon beau voyage à Paris! Moreover, I made sure not to do everything possible on my Paris list so that when I visit again, I will have a chance to cross off new things. There are so many things that could be done – and I didn’t want to waste them all in just one trip.

Liz Wegman, Director, Public Relations and Development

Liz WegmanI too am a native of Kansas City and  have been lucky to spend most of my career at PTPI.  My childhood was very fortunately filled with quite a bit of travel, mainly throughout the United States and especially to U.S. National Parks.  A lot of my earliest memories are vague – my parents go a million miles an hour and often I couldn’t even remember what state we were in – but I think the first memory that stands out is of Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.  There you can tour the cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people who lived in pueblos beneath the cliffs for more than 700 years.  It was beautiful and magical to me; I wanted to learn as much about the people and culture as I could.  That interest in learning and traveling still exists to this day

I graduated from Benedictine College with degrees in French, Mass Communications and English.  I spent a summer studying in Paris during college and spent a year in Switzerland after I finished school.  I’m still always on the lookout for my next adventure (and recently returned from a fabulous trip to beloved Switzerland), yet I also love enjoying Kansas City and the amazing friends and family I have here.  You’ll more often than not find me reading, walking or laughing.

Introduction of Staff Readers – Book #2

We would like to introduce the second group of staff readers, for the second book to be discussed by PTPI’s Global Book Club – Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder. Get to know them here, through their self-written bios, and stay tuned for the first book discussion later this week.

Verena Denk, Program Associate and European Youth Director

Verena Denk

People to People International has been part of my life for six years now. When I applied for this job in PTPI’s European Office in Berlin, I had no idea how many countries and people I would  get to know. I am in charge of developing and implementing programs in Europe. Since 2006, I also work very closely together with our student chapters in Europe. It’s a privilege to work with our inspiring volunteers in Europe, and elsewhere, and support them and their amazing projects.

I have always very much liked to travel. When I was 17, I received a scholarship from the German Parliament to spend one year in the United States. It was like winning the lottery, the first price being a second family and a life-changing experience. Since then, I have visited my host family several times and they also came to Germany. After high school, I studied business, languages and cultural studies at the University of Passau. I also spent one year studying at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Grenoble, France and one semester at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My favorite internship was at the United Nations Information Center in Paris. I consider myself very fortunate for having been able to experience all this and for making friends all over the world. It is great to have a job that enables me to help others exchange and cross borders. Nothing could be more inspiring!

Ruth Gardner, Membership Assistant

Ruth Gardner

After graduating from University of North Carolina at Wilmington and earning degrees in Communications Studies and Spanish, I started my nonprofit career at the Simmons YMCA in Charlotte, then accepted a job at Foundation For The Carolinas working in the Community Philanthropy department.  In 2008 I moved to Kansas City and began my career at PTPI.  I am currently a part time student at the University of Missouri Kansas City working towards my MPA with an emphasis on Nonprofit Management.

I am very proud of my heritage. My mother grew up in Viveiro, Spain and migrated to the United States in 1976. Growing up in a multi-cultural family setting, I was exposed to the Spanish and American-Southern traditions.  As a child I struggled with choosing which culture to identify with. In the 1980’s there wasn’t a prevalent Hispanic population in the South-East, resulting in many prejudices against my mother.  Despite her strong command of the English language, she was disregarded because of her accent and others claimed they didn’t understand her.  I credit these experiences for my ability to accept and help people from other cultures. For fun I enjoy running, cooking, reading and speaking Spanish with anyone who is willing.

Karen DeIulis Hoch, Managing Director, Americas Region and Conferences

Karen DeIulis Hoch

After graduating from Bentley College in Waltham, MA with a BS degree in Economics-Finance, I spent several years working for a private investment firm in Boston.  In 1994, I moved to the Kansas City area and found my interest was in event planning and marketing.  I joined the PTPI team in 2001 and eventually earned my Masters in Marketing Communications from the University of Kansas. I currently oversee PTPI’s community chapters in the Americas Region, as well as plan meetings and conferences for our adult members.  During my career at PTPI, I have traveled to fascinating places around the globe, including East Africa, which provided me with firsthand experiences on the conditions in which third world countries exist.

Growing up on the North Shore of Boston, MA I was surrounded by a strong Catholic Italian/Polish family. My father immigrated with his parents and ten siblings from Italy to the United States when he was a young boy.   My mother was one of three children born to Polish parents.  The Italian culture had a huge impact on my childhood, as well as my mother’s Polish traditions.  In addition, our neighborhood had its own diversity…Greeks, Portuguese, and ‘all-American’ families.   While reading Strength in What Remains, the question arose several times in my head – what if we were divided based on our heritage?  What would have become of me, my family, my neighbors and friends?

When my focus is not PTPI it is on my eight-year old son, Luc, who is in the process of developing his own passion for reading and understanding our global community (as well as sports)!  I also enjoy running, yoga, traveling, reading, good wine, going back home to Boston, and spending time with friends.

Rebecca Nunn, Assistant Director of Administration

Rebecca Nunn

Rebecca Nunn

I graduated from William Jewell College in 2004 with a degree in Business Administration and Music Management.  While in college I interned for many arts organizations in Kansas City including the Harriman-Jewell Series, The Friends of Chamber Music and the Folly Theater.  I was so thankful to find my job at PTPI after graduation.  I have worked in accounting/administration for five years, managing the daily accounting and general office administration as well as our scholarships and loans.  I love reading the scholarship essays; it is so inspiring to see what students all over the world are doing to promote peace!

My mother’s family is English/French and my father’s family is from southern Germany. Both came to America in the early 1800’s.  Our immediate family is pretty small; everyone still lives within a 20 mile radius of each other.  My husband and I are excited to welcome our first baby boy in March 2010! Other than working at PTPI, I am the President of the Board for Liberty Symphony Orchestra in Liberty, MO.  I play the violin in the orchestra from time to time, which I have been a part of for 10 years, and sing in the choir at our church, where my husband is the Music Director.  For fun, I like anything crafty – knitting, sewing, embroidery, and scrapbooking…if there is any time left in the day!

Introduction of Staff Readers

Introducing the first group of staff readers for our Global Book Club!  Get to know them here, through their self-written bios, and stay tuned for the first book discussion later this week.

Rosanne Kohlman Rosen, Senior Vice President of Operations

I have pretty much grown up with People to People International, having spent the last 31 years working  in publications, event planning and most recently as Senior Vice President of Operations.  I still remember the day I accepted the job at PTPI and telling my mother that I would only be here one year and it was a stepping stone in my career goals.

Little did I realize when I was a recent college graduate how much I would love and enjoy working with people from all parts of the world and having the opportunity to see so much of the world.  Growing up, travel was always an important part of our family so this was a natural stepping stone to expanding my personal and professional horizons.

Kristine, Jill and I realized the importance of identifying who we are and sharing our personal backgrounds with readers because this book is so intensely personal for the members of Nafisi’s book club.  As three American women who grew up in the Midwest, our discussions often centered around the idea that we were experiencing it through the lens of our backgrounds.

I am involved in the Jewish community serving on the Board of Trustees of my local synagogue.  My father is a Holocaust survivor and always instilled in me the absolute need to be fair and free of prejudice – probably a result of what happened to him while growing up in Germany.  My husband, Howard and I love to travel and enjoy cooking, wine, jazz and exercise.

Kristine Knutter, Youth Programs Coordinator

Kristine Knutter
Kristine Knutter

After graduating from William Jewell College in 2005, earning degrees in International Business and Spanish and Business Administration with a specialty in Leadership/Management, I began working for People to People International (PTPI) as the Youth Programs Coordinator.  I administer PTPI’s Student Chapter Program and have the opportunity to engage with more than 85 Student Chapters around the world. I also serve as a delegation leader at PTPI’s annual student conference, the Global Youth Forum.  I love working for People to People International and am inspired daily by the awesome students I work with!

I am currently a part time graduate student in the Global and International Studies program at the University of Kansas.  My areas of study include the Middle East, Conflict and Peace and specifically the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.  I am part of a large family that all live in the Kansas City area and while I was raised Christian and studied Islam, I am agnostic.

For fun, I run in road races, travel, spend time with my family, dance, and study languages including Spanish, Arabic and Bulgarian

Jill Helsel, Chapter Coordinator, Americas Region

Jill Helsel
Jill Helsel

I graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 2005, where I earned a degree in Tourism with a minor in Anthropology.  Fresh out of college and in need of a paycheck, I took a job doing accounting for a small business that specialized in event production and sponsorship evaluation.   A few years later, I began volunteering at a local non-profit organization called Sudan Sunrise.  My volunteer work inspired me to pursue a career in the non-profit industry, so I began applying for jobs with several Kansas City-area non-profit organizations.  To my great luck, I was hired by People to People International!  I began working for PTPI in February 2008 as Membership Assistant and later was given the opportunity to move into the position of Chapter Coordinator for the Americas Region.  I also administer PTPI’s International Visitors Program.  Working with chapter members from all across the Americas, and throughout the world, has been such an eye-opening experience for me.  I am continually inspired by the amazing efforts of our chapter members worldwide!

I grew up in a Christian family, but we were never actively involved with a church for much of my childhood.  After a few years of being agnostic while in college, I was later baptized for a second time and currently attend a local Baptist church.

My husband Dennis and I live in Kansas City, where we are surrounded by a wonderful support system of family and friends.  We are expecting our first baby in February 2010 and just recently found out that it’s a boy!

For fun, I enjoy reading, baking, traveling, watching figure skating and spending time with my family.

We will post weekly discussion questions here and welcome all to contribute to the conversation.

Stay tuned for featured PTPI staff blogs and the January 1 announcement of book two.
