This week, the benefits of international education and international exchange were celebrated worldwide through International Education Week.  The purpose of People to People International is to enhance international understanding and friendship, and one of the ways PTPI works to achieve this goal is through educational activities. Ten years ago, the School and Classroom Program was created in an effort to use a classroom setting to enhance students’ knowledge of the world and to build friendships that span the globe.

In those ten years, an incredible number of teachers, students and countries have participated:

  • 3,092 teachers
  • 227,680 students
  • 123 countries

Teachers in Asia, Spanish-speaking countries, Australia, and the UK are some of the most requested areas for teachers who join the program. We are in need of teachers in this region for class partnerships. We are also seeking non-U.S. teachers with students ages 5-12, and additional U.S. teachers with students ages 14-18.

Although registration for participating in the School and Classroom Program during the 2011-2012 year is over, we will still accept registrations from teachers who fulfill the request of a teacher currently awaiting a partner classroom. Learn more about the program and register today on PTPI’s website.

The Global Youth Murals Project is a much-loved component of our School and Classroom Program.  Developed in 2002, the project invites students to express their views on culture, friendship and peace through art.  The murals are then shared online and in person, through exhibits, so that as many people as possible can experience their beautiful international perspectives.

Each year, we eagerly await the arrival of murals from all points on the globe.  We were thrilled to recently hear from friends in Russia and Indonesia that their murals are on the way:

Murals from School 2 Purwokerto in Central Java, Indonesia

A collection of murals from past years have gone on tour across the United States, hosted by PTPI chapter members who organized exhibits in order to share them with their communities.  First they visited our El Dorado County, California Chapter, then our Sheboygan, Wisconsin Chapter.

Next they spent a few months with our Delaware Chapter before heading to Arizona for our Worldwide Conference, allowing members from all around the world to enjoy them.

After the conference they will head to the Atlanta, Georgia Chapter, which has arranged for the murals to be displayed in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, exposing them to a large and diverse audience.

Have you heard of PTPI’s Global Youth Murals?  A School and Classroom Program project, they are created by students (grade levels K-12) all over the world.  They are simply amazing and we are proud to display them within our office, at local galleries and on an online gallery…yet we wanted to provide more people with the opportunity to view these beautiful works of art.

The Global Youth Murals On Tour project was created as an opportunity for PTPI community chapters to host an exhibit of the murals for one month.  This is the last week to see the Global Youth Murals on Tour at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan, Wisconsin USA where they were hosted by PTPI’s Sheboygan Chapter.

Special thanks to PTPI’s El Dorado County Chapter (El Dorado Hills, California USA) for hosting in January 2010 and to the Delaware Chapter (Wilmington, Delaware USA) who will host the murals in April 2010.  For more information on how you can get involved, contact Paige at classroom@ptpi.org.
