“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

January 17, 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the American holiday that recognizes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the man who spoke the above words.  The holiday is the perfect opportunity to stop and think about what we can do to make life better for those around us.

People to People International values both humanitarian work and promoting peace, so this is a perfect time for our members worldwide to think about how promote PTPI’s mission – and to honor the legacy of Dr. King and all those who inspire us – through service.

What are you going to do for others?  Tell us about it, so we can tell the world.  If you need ideas, consider some of PTPI’s ongoing humanitarian projects, or think about supporting the work of your fellow PTPI members:

In mid-October, another PTPI family contribution was sent to our fellow members in Pakistan, to help them continue assisting those affected by the devastating flooding that occurred in July 2010.

You can still help – donate to PTPI’s International Friendship fund, online or by mail.  Here is the latest news on their on-going work:

As winter is arriving, we are raising funds to donate warm clothes and blankets to those affected.  Our chapter’s goal is to help more than 3,000 people, specifically children and women.  A set of one warm sweater and a blanket costs approximately $8 USD.  The total cost of the project is approximately $24,000 USD.  This is an urgent need and we request our international family to contribute as much as they can to achieve this target.  This is the time when the people affected from the worst disaster are hoping to get help – when they are helpless.

On September 20, 2010, our chapter (in partnership with a local scout association) supplied water cans with Water Purification Tablets, which are perfect for eliminating bacteria, viruses and the removal of sediment in order to purify drinking water.  We also supplied dry food packed in 500 grams, clothes, medicine and milk.  These items were distributed in Distt. Muzaffargarh.  In addition, insect spray was used in the area to kill and repel the surface insects which cause major viral disease.  The amount spent on this project was $2,100 USD.

Another contribution was wired to our Punjab, Pakistan Chapter yesterday, to continue support of their work to rebuild houses and provide food in their area.  Thank you to PTPI’s Midland, Michigan Chapter.

You can still contribute to recovery efforts in Pakistan – donate to PTPI’s International Friendship Fund and be sure to note that the contribution is for Pakistan.

Here is the latest update from Adnan Shahzad, President of PTPI’s Punjab, Pakistan Chapter:

On September 5, 2010, the Punjab Chapter contributed to supply rice (100 bags, each containing 40kg of rice) and cooking oil (100 packs, each with 1kg of oil).  The total value of the distributed supplies is $10,400 USD and the Punjab Chapter contributed $3,250 USD.

Ibrar Shuja coordinates the classification of donated goods.

The supplies were loaded into a truck and were distributed in District Rajanpur in Punjab Province by Distt. Rajanpur’s local authorities.  Collection of the supplies took place in a mosque in Gujranwala City.  This was a local community collection in which our chapter contributed the above mentioned amount.

Donated supplies were loaded in the presence of chapter officers and they also volunteered a helping hand to load the supplies.  Officers present were:

  • Aslam Rana, Manager, Public Relations
  • Muhammad Amir Khan, Home Stay Coordinator
  • Ibrar Shuja, Chapter Donor
