Update from Kenya

Bookmark and Share

This week we sent a contribution of $1,500 to our chapter in Mombasa, Kenya to cover a portion of tuition fees for the students still waiting to return to school. Below is a photo of the PTPI-sponsored students who are in school now.

Frank Okella, president of the chapter, sends his heartfelt gratitude to those who have donated. You can help make sure each student is soon back at school and learning. Donate online and be sure to comment that the gift is for Kenya.

Frank sent the following update:

Dear Friends,

These are the students that have reported to school. Eight of the students attend Changamwe Secondary School and the others are in local high schools. Our chapter the divided the $1,000 USD we collected from our members among  these ten who are now in school. We paid half of this term’s school fees and they were allowed to report. Thirteen student are still at home because they still don’t have funds.

In 2008, the Mombasa Chapter initiated a project called Pamoja Tuangamize Ujinga (Together Let Us Fight Ignorance) and our mission is to educate poor children. In our community, rural children – especially girls, often must drop out of school to help their families or get married. In rural Kenya, the most highly prized “posession” that anyone can have is an education. It is the foundation for higher living standards and an important tool in the long term eradication of poverty.

We are again appealing to our PTPI family to urgently assist these students. They are at risk of dropping out if they do not receive funds soon. We have followed up and found that some parents are sending these children out in the street to hawk goods and earn money to give to their parents for family upkeep.

We found these students in a very bad situation and we don’t want some of the girls to go back into marriage again after two years of hard work. If we don’t deal with the situation urgently, the future of these young girls and boys are doomed. We appeal to you to have passion for these vulnerable students and send them what you can.

Thank you in advance,
Frank

It is really inspiring to put a smile on the face of a student who is at the brink of seing his dreams getting shuttered due to lack of school fees!
The contributions from the well wishers will never go unrewarded.
