Special Welcome to Lindsey Wilson College Students

We are thrilled that students enrolled in the Intercultural Communication course at Lindsey Wilson College this semester will be joining us in reading Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation – our current Global Book Club selection.  Taught by Dr. Greg Phelps, the course is centered around learning about how effective communication between people of different cultural backgrounds can help to prevent misunderstandings and ultimately conflict.

An intended outcome of the course is the development of an appreciation for other cultures, and an ability and desire to thrive in culturally diverse environments – we at People to People International share a passion for these very ideas and are excited to connect with a new group of people and share thoughts on our mutual interests.

Dr. Phelps guides his students to make use of the opportunities for learning provided through the Internet – for example, the book club discussions taking place on the PTPI Blog.  By reading Trail of Tears, Dr. Phelps hopes that his students will begin to better understand both cultural assimilation as related to American Indian tribes and the cultural diversity that exists amongst the tribes that make up the American Indian population.

Welcome – we look forward to learning from your insights and perspectives!

1. Where were you born?

A small town in the dead center of Kansas.  You guess which one.  Here’s a hint:  The main female characters in the movies Vertigo and Thoroughly Modern Millie were from there too.

2. Are there any words you live by?

This motivates me:  Anything worth doing or achieving takes real effort.  You get what you put into it.

3. What do you usually have for breakfast?

Oatmeal, juice, coffee and more coffee.

4. What’s your favorite thing to do outside?

It’s a tie: walking my dog and digging in my flower gardens; sometimes the dog helps with the latter.

5. So you just won the lottery, what are you going to do?

Give a significant portion of it to research for epilepsy and use the rest to make the lives of my loved ones easier.

A Message from PTPI’s Punjab, Pakistan Chapter

Dear PTPI Family and Friends,

I hope this email finds you all well.  You may be aware of the recent flood disaster, the worst ever in Pakistan.  I’m writing this to you after visiting some of the approachable areas affected by the flood.

The number of people suffering from the massive floods in Pakistan exceeds 14 million – more than the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.  The death toll in this disaster is approximately more than 1,600 people so far in the floods that first hit Pakistan two weeks ago.

This is the time that we should help these people as much as we can.  We can help in any manner, supplying food, water and clothes.

Adnan Shahzad and members of the Punjab, Pakistan Chapter with a member of the Tainan, Taiwan Chapter at PTPI's 2009 Asia Pacific Conference in Taiwan

We feel it is our responsibility to help, and therefore, as President of PTPI’s Punjab, Pakistan Chapter, I myself, along with some chapter and community members, have contributed approximately $4,000 USD to date.

We are making boxes that include water, wheat, cooking oil, beans, sugar and milk.  Each box will be distributed to a family in need.  Our goal is to make 500 boxes to start and this target can be achieved with the help of our friends in the community, as well as by requesting our international chapter friends to contribute to this great cause.  We are trying as much as we can to help them survive.

Contributions may be sent to PTPI World Headquarters.  If sending a check, please be sure to mention Pakistan in the memo section.  If using a credit card online, donate to the International Friendship Fund and use the note section to indicate that the contribution is for Pakistan.

For further details, you can contact me by email at president@ptpipk.org.

Best Regards,

Adnan Shahzad
