It was a light bulb, “aha!” moment for Adam Tcharni, president of the Brooklyn, New York USA (LMGHS) Student Chapter:
“Our school Coordinator of Student Affairs came to one of our meetings and said that it wasn’t interactive enough, that it was too much of a lesson where the officers were simply informing the members about different events and afflictions. So, we created seven different committees. Each committee contains a committee leader, as well as equal percentages of the total number of members in the chapter.”
Committees are groups of people appointed to perform a certain service or function. They investigate, report on and act upon a particular matter or issue, such as whether to raise your city’s sales tax or to implement a new policy. Here’s a fun fact – in the United States Senate alone, there are 20 different standing committees, 68 subcommittees and 4 joint committees!
Adam and the chapter’s Vice-President, Daniel Novak, formed a total of seven committees for their chapter:
- Operation International Children
- Earthquakes in Haiti/Chile and other natural disasters
- AIDS in Africa and other ailments in the world
- Community and local efforts
- Genocide in Darfur
- The Water Crisis and UNICEF Tap Project
- Poverty and hunger in the world
These committees reflect issues and humanitarian initiatives that the members of the chapter are most passionate about. In addition to thinking up fundraisers to support these issues, each group researches and reports on why problems like AIDS in Africa and genocide in Darfur occur. At every chapter meeting, the committees discuss these problems and brainstorm ways to solve and prevent future crises.
Not to brag too much about these chapter members, but they also attached reports from each committee to their most recent Team Peace Challenge Quarterly Report! We encourage all of our chapter members to follow their lead – committees are a great way to delegate chapter duties, work on and learn about various issues all at once and get EVERY member involved in your chapter’s activities!

Dear president of Brooklyn, new york student chapter, lets come together with Uganda’s Dream Student Chapter to provide solution to the increasing AIDS patients in Uganda.
Can we stand in positive solidarity to promote peace through friendship and understanding??
